Functions:

  • cataloguing and recataloguing;
  • participation in the compilation of the name/title authority database created by the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania;
  • UDC classification; subject indexing based on the Library of Congress Subject Headings.

The department has 2 sections:

  • the Cataloguing Section;
  • the Classification and Subject Indexing Section.

The Cataloguing Department was founded in 1941.  It now catalogues all print and electronic documents newly acquired by the library, except for pre-1800 print publications, maps and other documents kept in the Rare Book Department.  The department also carries out recataloguing documents already kept in the library holdings (with the documents requested by the library users having the highest priority).  Each year, about 18 to 19  thousand titles are catalogued and recatalogued.  On January 1, 2011, the library‘s electronic catalogue contained 230,973 entries.

The compilation of the electronic catalogue started in October 1995.  Until December 31, 2001, both electronic and card catalogues had been updated.  Starting January 1, 2002, the card catalogue has not been updated, but is available for the readers to use.

Catalogue software in the library changed several times over the years (1995–2000: ALICE, UK MARC format; 2001–2003:  LIBIS, UNIMARC format; 2004–2005: UNIMARC format; 2006-2008: ALEPH UNIMARC format; since February 2009: ALEPH MARC 21 format).

In the classification and subject indexing section, all documents are accorded UDC index numbers.  The documents published after 2000 are given subject headings based on the Library of Congress Subject Headings.
