The department was established in 1976 and was aimed to accelerate and improve the search and use of information sources. The biologists of the Institute of Ecology and other research institutions are provided with the printed items in Lithuanian, Russian, English (some in other) languages corresponding to the research trends of the institute.
Main research trends at the Institute of Ecology:
1. Regularities and mechanisms of functioning, diversity, interaction and relationship with environment, adaptation and evolution in the aquatic ecosystems, their populations and communities;
2. Regularities and mechanisms of functioning, adaptation and evolution of populations and communities; research of their fauna and diversity in the terrestrial ecosystems;
3. The role of parasites in the ecosystems and populations, their diversity, ecological and genetic regularities of interaction with hosts;
4. Physiological and ecological mechanisms of chemoreception, pheromone communication and animal behaviour as well as theoretical foundations for the control of these processes.
The department organises exhibitions to celebrate anniversaries of scholars.
